Two all time favourite bands: The Backstreet Boys and New Kids On The Block came together on 29/04/2012 at the O2 Arena in London for their huge concert, as part of their international tour. I was totally over the moon when I was asked to do the make-up for the event. It was an absolute honour to work with them, after all I grew up dancing to their music at my school discos :)

I worked alongside the lovely Fiona Tanner, hair & make-up artist. Once make-up & hair was complete and the boys burst onto the stage we were on standby with make-up brushes for touch ups… which meant we got to see the guys perform too!

Before the gig started I was lucky enough to meet the lovely Peter Andre, who had trecked over to the O2 especially to be with NKOTBSB. It was great to meet all of the boys before starting make-up.

The turn out for the gig was absolutely incredible, literally every seat in the O2 Arena was filled!

I was incredibly impressed by their performance on stage – perfect voices and the ability to make the crowd go wild. True Boybands :)

Another year another soap awards, and another beautiful look to create for the red carpet…

In 2012, Hetti Bywater started as the new Lucy Beale on Eastenders and boy is she pretty! I was so excited to do her make-up, with those gorgeous doe-eyes and full pouty lips, this girl is a perfect canvas for any make-up artist.

We chose to base her look on the smoky eyes of Kiera Knightly. Sexy, sultry yet classy and elegant, which would flatter the long dark gown she would be wearing perfectly. The stylist Nina Sobers, worked with designer Tina Lobondi, who made this dress especially for Hetti, and her hair was created by session stylist Vicki Lord.

BEAUTIFUL SKIN

Hetti Bywater has gorgeous fair skin, as does Keira Knightly, so the look was easily recreated. I wanted the skin to look glowing – fair, but warm and lightly flushed with a hint of peachy colour. I also wanted to keep the texture of the skin soft and velvety.

I primed Hetti’s skin with Lancome’s La Base:

Using Chantecaille foundation in porcelain I used a fibre optic brush to buff it onto Hett’s skin using circular motions starting from the centre of her face and blending it out towards the outer edge of her face and dusted her skin with a light translucent powder to create a smooth base for her blush.

I used a soft peachy bronze (Chanel Desert Corail), to contour Hetti’s cheeks, and to add a soft glow to her forehead, nose, chin and neck.

Followed by a soft peach blush on the highest points of her cheekbones.

Smoky Eyes

I first prepped Hetti’s eyes with BareMineral’s Prime Time eyelid primer, to ensure that the make-up would stay put, and crease-free all night. It also evens out the tone of the eyelid, much like a foundation does to the skin.

I then applied a champagne, skin toned shadow with a pearly texture (not shimmery), all over Hetti’s eyelids and up to the brow bone.

Next, I applied a mid-tone brown into the crease of Hetti’s eyes only, blending it outwards rather than upwards to elongate her eyes.

I lined Hetti’s upper and lower lashline with MAC’s Dip down brown gel liner and softened the lines with a smudge brush. I was careful to press the product into the lashline rather than wiping it across, so that it created an illusion of depth and thick lushious lashes.

Taking a small contour brush, I darkened the outer corners of Hetti’s eyes with a deep chocolate brown matt shadow, pushing the product from the outer corner of the eye inwards, and also into the crease of her eyes, blending all the time to ensure there were no hard lines. I also followed the liner top and bottom to give it a smoky effect.

I lined the waterline of Hetti’s eyes with a dark brown wax liner by Maxfactor and finished with false lashes, and lashings of mascara.

I wanted to keep the eyes the emphasis, and so added a nude stain to Hetti’s lips with Dior’s Beige Indecise lipstick.

I kept the look velvety soft by finishing with a dusting of translucent powder.

The aim of this look is really fresh and pretty. Think spring flowers and the fresh glow that the soft sun starts to give your skin after a long pasty winter.

Less is more and colour should be subtle hints rather than full on bold. Give your skin a gorgeous healthy lift; apply tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier to your skin with a fibre optic brush, using circular motions to whip it on lightly, preventing the product from sitting in fine lines. skin should look real and soft and Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturiser gives a lovely light coverage, and a soft, radiant glow. If you don’t have a brush the warmth of your fingers will surfice.
Make sure you blend down the ‘v’ of your neck, because that is where the sun doesn’t hit, so it is always slightly lighter underneath your neck, and it is important not to forget to include it when applying your foundation.

Before we go any further, if you do wish to watch this tutorial, please click on to this link, where you can view it on youTube
Top Tip:
When you are testing your foundation colour, test against your chest and not your neck, as I said the neck is lighter, but your chest is more of a truer colour to your face shade.

Next, use a concealer.  I use Laura Mercier’s Secret camouflage for this part of the look.   It is my all-time favorite concealer, as it has just the right consistency without looking cakey. Use it under your eyes, and with this product you can go between using the light and the darker shade.  If you have darker circles beneath your eyes, then the peach colour is ideal to begin with and then you can blend it in to the rest of your skin colour by using the lighter shade too. Concentrate mainly on the dark rings beneath your eyes as you don’t want to cake your entire undereye, the skin is thin here and excess product collects within lines.

You want your skin to look nice and bright, and light – if you think of the spring and all of the flowers blooming, this is the thing you are trying to mimic.  Use your finger to pat the concealer under your eye.  Never pull the skin here, as it is very fine and so you need to be delicate with it.  Then use the concealer anywhere else where you may need it – around your nose, or on any blemishes.
Now it is time to add a little bit of a glow to the skin, but without looking like you have a tan.  At this stage of the look, I use Laura Mercier’s Gel Bronzer, and I apply it using my foundation brush again.  So using a brush pop it onto the tops of your cheekbones, then on to your forehead, where your temples are, and then over the bridge of the nose slightly, and over the chin and under the neck. The idea is to have no lines, and just create a natural glow to your skin. Blend any hard edges away using a clean  brush on your face and neck, then use your fingers to work that in.
Next, it is time to add a little highlighting.  I use Mac’s Cream Highlighter called Pearl.  Just dot that along your cheekbone to give it a slight sheen.
Now, take a coral colour lipstick, I’m using Mac’s Costa-Chic and use it on your
lips and cheeks.  This adds another lovely healthy glow.  Using another brush, a small fibre optic one, pop the colour onto your cheekbone using circular motions and take it over the apples of your cheeks. Use your fingers and really work it in, so there are no lines.  You want it to give you a natural glow, similar to what you have after going for a run, and it gives a fresh English rose look.  Then pop the same coral colour onto your lips, patting the product in so it looks like a stain.
Now it’s time to do your eyes, I’ve chosen lovely green and turquoises within one of Dior’s five-colour palettes for this part of the look.  Using a fluffy brush, take the middle shade, which is a light green. Dust it over your lower lid.  Don’t take it up to the crease line, because it needs to look like a hint of colour rather than anything too bright.  You can pat more of the shadow on using your finger; this will intensify the colour.
Take a smaller brush, and choose a shimmery lighter shade of green.  Pop it into the inner corner by your eye. Lastly take a darker green shade, and add that to the outer corner of the eyelid, this will add shading and definition.  Use the fluffy brush to blend it in.  Stay away from the socket line, as you want to keep it fresh and avoid being overpowering with colour.
To add more definition to your eyebrows, use a brow gel.  I use one by Tweezer Man.  Sweep the eyebrows up to set them and give them more definition.
Top Tip:
When you are curling your eyelashes, keep pumping them.  By doing this it gives them a nice curve, without bending them.  If you pump the curler ten times per lash, it will really open up your eyes even before adding the mascara.

It is time to add mascara at this stage of the look.  I like MaXFactor’s False Lash Effect Mascara.  Sweep from the roots of the lashes, zigzag as you go. Pull them straight upwards. Mascara can make your lashes look flirty if you pull them to the side, but by pulling them up you will give them a nice natural, fresh and wide awake appearance. Define them by pulling them straight upwards.  Look down into a mirror; this will avoid getting smudges on your face. Add a tiny bit to the bottom lashes.

Finish the look with a translucent powder – use a large brush to sweep over any areas you do not wish to be shiny – so mainly the t-zone, which is across your forehead and down your nose.

I hope you enjoy this lovely Spring look :)

Whilst doing make-up for a Tesco commercial last week I met beautiful model Henrietta, who is pictured here with me. She is wearing one of my new all-natural vegan lipstick shades (Code: Ls05) PHOENIX ORCHID.

The sultry, red-burgundy shade complimented Henrietta’s olive skin tone, dark features, and her sparkling white teeth incredibly, giving her an overall sultry look.

See below the image for a few tips on how to wear the Phoenix Orchid lipstick either for during the day or in the evening.

DAY use it as a stain during the day, patting the colour into your lips, and why not use the same shade for your cheeks too?  Use your finger tip to blend a small amount onto the high point of your cheeks, and blend out over the apple.

PHOENIX ORCHID is a fabulous colour for the day or evening time.

Just over a month ago I received Ginvera Green Tea Whitening Marvel Gel. I was asked by the company themselves to test and review the product… as a beauty expert and product fan, I was naturally happy to oblige!

The packaging of this product is fresh and clean, and I like the colour of the tube too – again very fresh.

Overall, I am seriously impressed by this skin care product, after using it for just one week I already felt a massive difference in not only the texture of my skin, but it’s appearance too.

The aim of Ginvera Green Tea Whitening Marvel Gel is to eliminate blackheads by gently rubbing them away, it also claims to:

  • Rub away deep layers of dead skin cells.
  • Contract pores for refined skin (As dead skin cells have been cleared from the pores).
  • Lighten black spots, freckles & scars.
  • Remove oil seeds.
  • Regulate sebum secretion to prevent pimples.
  • Brighten dull complexion.
  • Change dark, rough skin to smooth skin.
  • Whiten skin as it gives way to new born skin.
  • Enhance quick absorption of skin care products.

As a make-up artist, I am well aware that regularly removing dead skin cells through the use of exfoliation prevents breakouts and rough patchy skin. I have always advised that we do not over exfoliate, because it may lead to damage rather than good, and also can lead to an enhanced production of sebum thus producing more conjestion – leading to blackheads, whiteheads  and greasier skin. However, Ginvera Green Tea Whitening Marvel Gel is so gentle to apply, that I really found benefit in using it once daily.

Initially, it is strange to get used to, because you apply it to dry skin in circular motions with your finger tips – you can literally feel your dead skin cells lifting from the surface.  It reminds me of that feeling when you massage cream into your skin after being on a hot holiday and getting sunburnt and areas of skin start to rub away.  As you massage the gel into your skin it forms little bits on the surface of your skin whilst rubbing away dead skin cells with it.

I cleanse only at night, and then use water in the morning, so that I don’t over cleanse and dry my skin out. I choose to cleanse at nighttime because we gather so much dirt from the air on our faces throughout the day, need to remove any make-up worn, plus our skin is most active at night and will really reap the benefits of being nourished.

If you think of the times you’ve had your hair washed at the hairdressers, they wash it twice – once to remove the surface dirt and the second to deep cleanse – now apply the same technique to your skin. I use the product once to remove make-up and the second to really deep cleanse.

To use Ginvera Green Tea Whitening Marvel Gel: use on a dry face with dry fingers. Use about a 5-pence size dot, and dot it onto your forehead, cheeks, chin, nose and neck. Massage the gel into your skin using circular motions for about one minute and rinse off with luke-warm water.

I would recommend doing this over a sink or towel, as the skin rubs away it tends to fall off the face!

The things I love most about this product are…

  • The way in which it makes my skin feel incredibly soft after every use.
  • The fact that it really has kept my skin clear.
  • The bright, luminous appearance that it has left my skin with.

If you have sensitive skin, be sure to investigate the ingredients within the product further before using it, although a fantastic product, it does contain some synthetic ingredients.

I, myself am an advocate of all natural products, and for this reason will always research any synthetic ingredients used to ensure that they have been approved ‘safe to use’ by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel. Because this product is an exfoliant, and it does contain synthetic ingredients, I would suggest using it for short periods at a time, whilst using it daily MAYBE harmless, I don’t recommend continuous exfoliation. I feel that all natural products have far more benefit over long periods of time. This is a great in-between product to give your skin a boost.

Ginvera Green Tea Whitening Marvel Gel 60ml can be purchased from http://www.janiro.co.uk at £22 + P&P

At just 24 Milly Mae has already achieved so much, including writing her own unique songs. One of her most recent successes being performing with Lemar and Beverley knight at a charity fundraising event in London.

Milly’s voice is so beautiful it gives you those goosebumps that make the hair’s on the back of your neck raise and tingle when you listen to it

I had the personal pleasure of doing Milly Mae’s make-up for a recent photo shoot…

So how did I decide on Milly’s make-up & hair?

Milly Mae is young, fun, and edgy – but still gentle… much like her voice as a soul singer.  I wanted to create edgy but very beautiful make-up, embellished with a young, fun image.

Milly has beautiful big eyes and high cheek bones, these are the features that I chose to really excentuate. I perfected Milly’s skin using Chantecaille foundation and Laura Mercier secret camouflage on blemishes and beneath her eyes, creating a fresh dewy skin, but with minimal light reflection due to bright camera lights.

Milly Mae:  A Kent-based singer-song writer who’s talent is relentless!

I contoured Milly’s cheeks with NARS Laguna bronzer

And MAC ambering rose blusher along the top of her cheekbones.

I chose to emphasise Milly’s eyes with a dark smokey shadow, keeping it only on her top lid and blending into the crease of her eyes, and winging it out at the side’s for a sexy seductive appearance. I kept her lower lash line free from mascara, so as not to make it too vamp, and to keep the look fresh and wide awake. I opened up Milly’s eyes further with a full set of Eyelure lashes, these are my favourite due to their lightweight flexibility.

I finished the look with Laura Mercier’s vibrant red lipstick ‘seduction’ which was actually introduced to me by singer Candy Rose

I had already curled Milly’s hair for a previous shot, and wanted to create something less ‘pretty’ and more edgy and beautiful, so I created a bouffant sweeping into a gathered editorial side bun with plenty of texture. The idea was for this to look done but undone – in a natural non-overly fixed way.

VERDICT: Glamorous & Gorgeous :o )

Who ever said winter has to be cold and miserable? I love winter for it’s festive feeling, and for the chance to really go glam with our make-up. In the winter, due to the lower level of light, we can get away with deeper, super sultry shades. These have a slightly editorial magazine-feel about them. So it’s a very exciting time of year, with loads of room to experiment with colours we may not usually dare to wear. Our skin loses it’s natural tan during the winter months when the sun is less strong, but for those of us who prefer that sun kissed to porcelain appearence, we can really fake it, so good that it’s got to be real!

During the cold winter months our skin needs some serious tender love, and care. Even if it doesn’t feel dry, it’ll be fighting to stay moisturised beneath the tough surface layer that we see. It’s really important to moisturise daily and exfoliate once a week. The look we want to achieve is a dewy, glowing complexion right? So…

Apply moisturiser before any other make-up – something light weight and easily absorbed, I LOVE  elemental herbology cell plumping facial hydrator, which also contains SPF 8. Available in Space NK.

Smooth this over your face and neck, there’s no need to wait for it to absorb until you apply your foundation, it actually adds to the glow of the finished look.

Referring to Paula’s image above, I then applied Chantecaille foundation – future skin, [also available in Space NK], to the centre of her face, blending it out towards the edge of her face, but not directly applying at the edge. Skin rarely needs full coverage at the sides of our faces and this is what can cause foundation to look mask like.

I next used Laura Mercier secret camouflage to conceal any blemishes, making them invisible to the eye.  Using my fingers I patted in the concealer over the blemishes and then used a fine brush for small detail.

To give Paula’s skin a really sun-kissed appearance, I smoothed Laura Mercier’s bronzing gel over her forehead, cheeks, bridge of nose, chin and neck.

To finish, and to leave her skin with a lovely glow I added a touch of natural, rose-coloured bronzer onto the apples of Paula’s cheeks.

I applied Chanel’s cream shadow in silver grey, which has annoyingly now been discontinued even though it was the best cream shadow ever made!! It was more like a moose gel than a cream, never creasing – AMAZING! I smoothed the colour over Paula’s lower lid and blended away into her crease using a fluffy brush, I then swept the colour over Paula’s lower lash line.

Next I patted a silver shadow by Dior over the top of the cream shadow on Paula’s lower lid.

Followed by sweeping the purple shadow into the crease of both of her eyelids.

I finished the look with black gel liner smudged through the upper and lower lash line, and by applying a natural, sheer colour berry lipstick by Dior for a healthy kissable grin. (http://di1-3.shoppingshadow.com)

This look is such a pretty look to brighten up those grey winter days, so have fun playing :)
